Hoverboards are prohibited from being used on roads, footpaths and cycle paths in the UK, as made legal under the Highways Act of 1835. Under this law, any use of a ‘carriage’ on pavements is prohibited and as hoverboards are motorized, they fall under the definition of being a ‘carriage’. Also, it should be noted that hoverboards do not have features which would make it road legal such as insurance, tax and the right safety features such as lights and signals. Hence, they are only legally usable in confined areas such as one’s compound with the permission of the owner of the compound.
